PAID STATE OR LOCAL TAXES

You can either deduct state and local general sales taxes or state and local income taxes as an itemized deduction, but you cannot deduct both. If you choose to go the general sales tax way, you have two choices of how to determine the amount of your deduction: you can use the Optional State Sales Tax Tables or the actual taxes you paid over the course of the year, but you should keep your receipts all year in order to provide proof of any actual sales taxes you claim.
